– Jay Feaster was fired as general manager of the Calgary Flames on Thursday 12 December 13. The announcement by President of Hockey Operations, Brian Burke. Burke who just recently came in to his actual position in September will act as the general manager on an interim basis until a new general manager. According to Burke, the Flames were not playing up to their full potential and were losing games and points in the standing with late comebacks from opponent teams. At this head coach Bob Hartley and his staff will not be touched.
Flames in search of a new GM
Now on to whom the Flames are aiming for. Rumors and sources are stating that the Flames have spoke to the Dallas Stars to ask permission to speak to former Stars GM and Flames star, Joe Niewendyk. Other prospects like the Buffalo Sabres were looking at are: Jim Benning in Boston and Claude Loiselle in Toronto. According to some sources near Joe Niewendyk, the position doesn’t seem to interest him.
Evander Kane trade rumors persist
It appears that the Evander Kane trade rumors are still persisting. Kevin Cheveldayoff, the Jets general manager still get calls about his power forward. But for Cheveldayoff, he will not trade his blue chip unless he gets an offer he can’t refuse. Some of the teams who are interested in Kane are the Montreal Canadiens, the New York Rangers, the Philadelphia Flyers, the New York Islanders, the Florida Panthers and a few other teams have also inquired of his availability. According to TFP, the Canadiens and Flyers are the teams who are the most aggressive in obtaining his services.
For Montreal, it means getting bigger with an offensive upside and for the Flyers it is mostly offensive. The Flyers and Jets have been scouting each other. The Flyers might be willing to part with Brayden Schenn, Matt Read and a prospect/pick for Kane. The Winipeg Jets are asking two NHL proven top six forwards and a top prospect or pick. According to the CSNNE, the Bruins would also make a pitch for Kane should he become available by sending Brad Marchand, Jordan Caron, Malcolm Subban and a high draft pick for Kane.
Is Danny Brière on the trading block
Some sources close to the teams are revealing that Daniel Brière has asked to be traded if his play continues to be the way head coach Michel Therrien has employed him so far this season. The unrestricted free agent the Canadiens got last summer when the Flyers bought him out has seen reduced play time at approximately 10 minutes a game lately and Brière is not really happy with the situation. Brière acquired last summer when the Flyers used their buyout compliance rule on him was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens with a contract worth 8 million for two years.
Blackhawks acquire LaBarbera
The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired goaltender Jason LaBabera from the Edmonton Oilers in a minor transaction on Saturday for future considerations. LaBarbera, who’s 33, had 1 win and three losses with a 3,28 goal against average for the Oilers while compiling a .870 save percentage this season. In his career, Jose LaBarbera had a 60-73-19 with a goal against average of 2,86 and a save percentage of ,907. This move is believed to be a precautionnary move due to Corey Crawford’s injury who will be out for 3 to 4 weeks.
