According to Elliott Friedman from Sportsnet, many teams are knocking at the door of general manager Marc Bergevin of the Montreal Canadiens and Jim Nill of the Dallas Stars. As reported earlier this week in a different post, the market seems to be centered around defensemen. The two teams who have a surplus of quality defensemen are the Stars and the Canadiens.Montreal has eight defensemen on their roster carrying Greg Pateryn, who was signed to a one way contract in the off-season and first rounder Jarred Tinordi who would need to clear waivers if he was returning to the AHL St John’s affiliate team. In Dallas, Jim Nill doesn’t want to put in a position where he would have to put defenseman Jamie Oleksiak on waivers and risk losing him with nothing to show for. Friedman reports that because both teams are very successful in the early stage of the season, Dallas and Montreal can allow themselves to be patient and somewhat greedy in the return of their excess of defensemen.
Schenn and Carle on the Market
Matt Carle
Bob McKenzie reports that the trade market is fairly quiet for now in this early part of the season but he expects for trades to pick up around the end of November. Two defensemen who are being rumored and discussed in trade rumors are: Luke Schenn with the Philadelphia Flyers. In the case of Schenn, he has all the right traits to be dealt quickly but his hefty salary is what causes the teams to shy away. Schenn has been left out of the lineup a few games and he is a 3.6M cap hit.
Mckenzie reports also that Matt Carle from the Tampa Bay Lightning is another player been mentioned in trade talks but again his salary at 5.5M is scaring most of the teams away. One thing for sure is that the Tampa Bay Lightning will trade Carle before the trading deadline of the 29 Feb 16 and the Tampa Bay Lightning will have to pick up a portion of his salary in order to unload him.
